KATHAK

WHAT IS KATHAK?

Kathak is one of the eight forms of classical Indian dance from Northern India. This art form was performed by Kathakars (storytellers) who traveled from village to village emoting stories through dance.

MY KATHAK JOURNEY

I completed my Kathak Pranam (KP) Ceremony in the summer of 2021. The KP signifies a public graduation from the art form and debut as a solo composing artist — an opportunity earned from the guru by a handful of students after rigorous testing.

Kathak has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I trained for over 13 years with my guru (teacher). I am committed to the time honored tradition of guru-shishya parampara (upholding the teachings and value system of the guru) by sharing my love and knowledge of Kathak with others.

Kathak Pranam Ceremony

My KP Ceremony was a 2.5 hour recital featuring seven dance items that included a live section harmonizing my dance with guest artists on Tabla (percussion), Harmonium (keyboard), and vocal; a self-composed piece reflecting my composing and teaching skills taught to selected students from the dance school; and multiple solo dances with costume changes showcasing aspects of the Kathak syllabus.

My favorite KP item: Self Composed Piece

I composed an original Katha (story) of an Indian immigrant girl’s Pravas (journey) through three phases of her life—from childhood to motherhood —told through the nine emotions of Kathak: wonder, sadness, happiness, disgust, anger, courage, fear, love, and peace.

Preparing for my KP

The process took over a year to plan and execute! During this time, I researched music; created the story for each dance piece with the guidance of my guru; practiced and refined all aspects of the dances; designed my costumes; conceptualized the stage/sets; created the sound and lighting scripts; devised the show's narrative script; coordinated rehearsal schedules for all the performers; recruited and instructed volunteers to run the technical aspects of the show; and much more!

If you have a spare three hours, watch the recording here… If you have a few minutes, read this article where I was interviewed about my KP journey!

But I promise it’s worth the three hours to watch ;)
